Hundreds of UK schools are crumbling under the weight of urgent repairs and maintenance needs, yet they remain overlooked and underfunded. From leaky roofs to unusable classrooms, infrastructure failures are disrupting thousands of children’s education. Last year, a report by the National Audit Office (NAO) highlighted that funding levels in England have significantly contributed to the deterioration of school buildings, with 24,000 structures beyond their intended design lifespan.

The NAO also revealed that progress within the government’s School Rebuilding Programme has been hindered by construction providers failing to take up contracts. Although the programme, launched in 2020, aims to refurbish or rebuild around 500 schools within a decade, the reality paints a grim picture. Despite 500 schools being included in the scheme, by this summer, only 62 had been assigned to construction companies, and just 23 had been completed since construction was scheduled to begin in 2021. The delay has left hundreds of ageing, leaky school buildings in desperate need of attention, with thousands of pupils and staff spending all week in substandard buildings.
